Art, craft fair, Painting, Watercolour

I’ve been busy painting…..but no cards…..

Hello 🙂

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been doing a lot of painting practice. If you are new to my blog (welcome, thank you for reading today’s post) over the past year I have been teaching myself to paint with Watercolours.

I am also teaching myself Calligraphy, both with the intention of improving my card making skills.

As I have been practicing my watercolours I haven’t been making any cards, or even practicing my calligraphy as much.

I guess sometimes that’s how it goes, isn’t it…..

Crafty phases

I tend to craft in phases. If I’ve recently mastered a new style of lettering, bought a new ink colour or new card stock I’ll use lots of it over numerous projects. I do always go back to tried and tested designs though…Layering coloured card to highlight the main picture or sentiment is a firm favourite of mine, for example.

I guess that’s how our styles evolve….

Some new craft techniques have definitely stuck though, becoming part of my ‘go-to’ card making toolbox.

Sentiments and phrases in stand alone calligraphy, for example.

When I started out making cards I would have stuck ribbons and flowers all over this card, but as my style has developed I can now create a different type of card, letting the calligraphy work be the centre piece.

Don’t get me wrong though, I do still love a good ribbon or bow, especially on Christmas cards 😃

All this painting practice will help with my cards too……

……or maybe it’s just for fun and is another hobby and string to my bow. As long as I’m enjoying it, that’s the main thing…..

So the painting…..

I’ve been working on a few paintings recently, of watercolour flowers, which has really helped me understand shading and detail, colour blending and creating different colour mixes.

Below is my most recent finished piece

I’m really proud of it and will definitely be framing it at some point.

The shading practice has been really useful and I will be able to apply what I’m learning in paintings on greetings cards……oooooo, Christmas paintings…….😃🎄

Below is one of the books I have been using for reference, in true mariebxmastree style – jumping straight to the pictures and not reading the step by step process guides 😂

** I have no affiliate links to this book or its Author, I just happen to have borrowed this book off a family member when I started painting 😊 **

I guess I had better get back to card making though, otherwise I’ll have no stock for the craft fair……😁

(If you are new to my blog I am doing my first solo craft fair at the end of 2018, read all about it in my 2018 craft goals post. )

Do you craft in phases too? I’d love to hear if you have a crafty stash full of tools and techniques you’ve tried and evolved…..or not gone back to 😁….

Thank you for reading today’s post and Happy Crafting!

    1. Thank you so much Mary, that’s so lovely of you to say. I really appreciate you taking the time to read my post and comment. I love to paint, having only recently found it, so I’m really thrilled that people like my work. Thank you again
