How to make a foil border card

Hello there!

In my previous post about my craft goals for 2018 I wrote about how I’m going to work on posting more regularly this year.

And so, without further ado, my first ‘how to’ post of 2018.

How to make this foil border card;

For this project you’ll need

  1. A blank greetings card – whichever size you’d like. I’ve used a 5×5 white card
  2. Craft foil – I’ve used foil from this kit from The Works but other foils are available to buy (there are no affiliated links, I just happen to have this kit in my craft stash)
  3. Masking tape of some kind (fairly low tack, you’ll need to remove it without ripping your cardstock
  4. Super tacky glue
  5. An old paintbrush you don’t mind not using again for painting (but do keep it for future glue applications)

Using the masking tape mask out a rough square on your card. It doesn’t need to be exact unless that’s the design you are going for

Once you have masked out the area apply a thin layer of tacky glue with the paint brush

Apply a thin layer of glue around the outside edge of your mask.

The glue on the outside will be where your craft foil will stick so you will not need to apply any to the middle of the masked area

And now for the waiting game……

The glue will need to dry a little before the foil can stick to it. It needs to be tacky but not completely dry.

Once the glue is tacky take a section of the craft foil and press it, silver side down, onto the card.

Apply a little pressure with your fingers to help the foil stick.

Once you have applied a little pressure to the whole area of glue gently pull back the craft foil. The colour foil will stick to the glue and will be adhered to the card once the sheet is peeled back.

If the glue is still a little too wet when you apply the foil the colour won’t be able to stick so leave the glue for a little while longer before applying the second pass.

To create the full border repeatedly apply the foil piece to the whole area so that the glue is completely covered.

Keep placing the foil piece over the glue until you get the coverage/density of colour you would like.

Once the glue is completely dry slowly peel back the masking tape, taking care not to pull at the card stock underneath

Once the masking tape is removed you will have created a foil border ready for any decoration that you would like to add! 😁

I have used this technique to create a border for a birthday card, where I have used the square created by the foil for a handwritten calligraphy message.

<<<<<
are so many options though, many different coloured foils, different shapes of masks to create different centres for your cards.

Let your crafty imagination loose and have a try.

I hope you've found this post useful. If you have been inspired to give this technique a go I would love to see your creations, feel free to leave a comment.

Happy crafting!

    1. I’m glad you found it interesting Jessica. Id bought a pack of foils ages ago but didn’t really know how to use them. Having seen lots of inspiration on Instagram I thought I’d dig them out of the craft cupboard 🙂
